Information about our Hair Transplant surgery
What is a Hair Transplant procedure?
Hair transplant surgery is performed to restore hair to areas of the scalp that are bald or that have thinning hair. There are multiple types of hair replacement surgery. Most commonly, these involve hair transplantation, but flap surgery, tissue expansion of the scalp and scalp reduction surgery, are also methods used for hair replacement. Each of these types of surgeries can be used alone, or in combination, to provide the patient with the best possible outcome for hair replacement.

There are various types of procedure within hair transplants, the principal ones are listed below:
  • Hair transplantation involves removing small pieces of hair-bearing scalp from a donor site and using them as grafts to be relocated to a bald or thinning area of the scalp.
  • Flaps surgeries involve moving hair bearing scalp tissue into bald areas of the scalp.
  • Tissue expansion allows the hair bearing scalp to be expanded to help cover areas of the scalp that have no hair.
  • Scalp reduction surgery involves surgically removing bald areas of the scalp and advancing, or bringing together, the hair bearing areas of the scalp.

Why have a Hair Transplant procedure?
Hair loss, or alopecia, is a common problem that affects both men and women and can be caused by stress, diseases, some medical treatments and genes. While some of these factors are temporary or can be reversed, many suffer permanent hair loss that can lead to self-confidence and self-esteem issues. Hair transplantation surgery can help men and women suffering from baldness or thinning hair.
The following are some common reasons why you may want to consider a hair transplant procedure:
  • You suffer from male or female pattern baldness and have thinning hair
  • Your hair loss is not a result of medication, stress or medical treatment
  • Your hair loss is permanent and cannot be treated non surgically
  • You have adequate hair growth or follicles than can be used for transplantationYou understand that treatment may take several months to several years
How is the procedure performed?
After thoroughly cleaning your scalp, a surgeon uses a small needle to numb an area of your head with local anaesthesia.

Two main techniques are used to obtain follicles for transplantation: FUT and FUE.
In follicular unit transplantation (FUT):
  • The surgeon will use a scalpel to cut out a strip of scalp skin from the back of the head. The incision is typically several inches long.
  • This is then closed with stitches.
  • The surgeon next separates the removed portion of scalp into small sections using a magnifying lens and sharp surgical knife. When implanted, these sections will help achieve natural-looking hair growth.
In follicular unit extraction (FUE)
  • The hair follicles are cut out directly from the back of the head through hundreds to thousands of tiny punch incisions.
  • The surgeon makes tiny holes with a blade or needle in the area of your scalp that’s receiving the hair transplant. They gently place hairs in these holes.
  • During one treatment session, a surgeon may transplant hundreds or even thousands of hairs.
  • After, the graft, gauze, or bandages will cover your scalp for a few days.
A hair transplant session can take four hours or more. Your stitches will be removed about 10 days after surgery.
You may require up to three or four sessions to achieve the full head of hair you desire. Sessions occur several months apart to allow each transplant to fully heal.
