Information about our Tummy Tuck surgery

What is Tummy Tuck surgery?
Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.  A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals.

Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include: Aging, Heredity, Pregnancy, Prior surgery and Significant fluctuations in weight.

Why have Tummy Tuck surgery?
Abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. Keep in mind that while the results of the procedure are technically permanent, the positive outcome can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight. For that reason, you may be asked to consider delaying the procedure if you are planning to get pregnant as the result of the surgery may be lost.

Abdominoplasty may be a good option for you if: You are physically healthy and at a stable weight.  You have realistic expectations; you are a non-smoker; have stopped smoking; or you are bothered by the feeling that your tummy is too large

How is the procedure performed?
There are three principal methods of performing the procedure

1 - The standard tummy tuck
In the most common type of tummy tuck a cut is made across the body from one hip to the other and around the belly button (umbilicus). The extra skin and fat are removed from just above the pubic hair up to the belly button. The muscles above and below the belly button are tightened. The skin is then sewn together to give a circular scar around the belly button and a long scar across the lower tummy.

2 - The mini tummy tuck
Here, a smaller amount of skin and fat is removed from the lower tummy, though there will still be a long horizontal scar above the pubic hair. Sometimes the muscles will also be tightened. No scar is left around the tummy button, which may be stretched to become a different shape.  A mini tummy tuck will give less of an effect than a full tummy tuck.

3 – The fleur-de-lis tummy tuck
For patients with lots of extra skin on the lower and upper tummy, a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck might be appropriate. Here, as well as the long horizontal cut of the standard tummy tuck, there is a vertical cut too, so the scar looks like an anchor
